How to Build a Home Bar from Scratch
By All Star Liquor Team · 6 min read
You don't need a six-figure budget or a dedicated room. Our experts share the essential bottles, tools, and glassware for a world-class home bar.
Start with the Foundation: 6 Essential Bottles
A well-built home bar doesn't require 40 bottles. It requires 6 excellent ones that cover the spectrum of cocktail-making. Start with: (1) a quality bourbon — Elijah Craig Small Batch or Four Roses Single Barrel; (2) a blanco tequila — Olmeca Altos or Espolòn; (3) a London Dry gin — Tanqueray or Beefeater; (4) a versatile vodka — Tito's or Ketel One; (5) a aged rum — Diplomatico Reserva or Mount Gay Black Barrel; and (6) a Scotch for sipping — Glenmorangie Original or Monkey Shoulder blend. These six bottles cover virtually every classic cocktail recipe.
The Liqueur Layer
Once your base spirits are in place, add 3–4 liqueurs that unlock dozens of cocktail possibilities. Cointreau or Grand Marnier (orange liqueur) is essential for Margaritas, Sidecars, and Cosmopolitans. Campari opens up Negronis, Aperol Spritzes, and countless Italian aperitivo drinks. Sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica is exceptional) and dry vermouth transform your whisky and gin into Manhattans and Martinis respectively. Finally, a bottle of Luxardo Maraschino cherry liqueur adds a magical layer to Aviation cocktails and Old Fashioneds.
Tools: The Short List
You need fewer tools than you think. A quality cocktail shaker (Boston shaker or cobbler style), a bar spoon for stirred drinks, a Hawthorne strainer, a jigger for accurate measuring, and a muddler for herbs and citrus. A hand juicer for fresh lemon and lime juice is non-negotiable — bottled juice simply cannot replicate fresh citrus in cocktails. For a complete setup, add a Y-peeler for citrus twists and a channel knife for spiral garnishes. Total investment: under $80 for a solid starter kit.
Glassware: Fewer Is More
Resist the urge to buy one of every glass shape. You can serve 90% of home cocktails from just three: a rocks glass (old fashioned glass) for spirit-forward cocktails over ice, a coupe for elegant up cocktails like Daiquiris and Manhattans, and a highball glass for long drinks like G&Ts, Palomas, and Moscow Mules. A wine glass and a champagne flute round out the collection for entertaining. Quality matters more than quantity — a set of six elegant coupes will serve you better than twenty mismatched pieces.
The Ice Question
Clear ice is the difference between an impressive home cocktail and a truly extraordinary one. Cloudy ice is full of dissolved air and minerals that melt quickly and dilute your drink. Clear ice — made by directional freezing — is denser, melts slowly, and looks stunning. A Wintersmiths or Clearly Frozen ice mold is an investment around $50 that immediately elevates your home bar game. Alternatively, freeze distilled or filtered water in a cooler with the lid off and carve it down — a technique used by the world's best cocktail bars.
